Beginning in September, five Finalists will compete for the $50,000 prize and the title of 2011 Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz of the American Pianists Association. Having been selected as finalists, each of the five pianists will perform as part of The REI Real Estate Services Jazz Premiere Series in their own fully-produced set at Indianapolis' Jazz Kitchen. As part of the finals on April 16, each pianist will accompany special guest Dee Dee Bridgewater.

The MacDowell Colony, the nation's leading artist residency program, will present its 51st Edward MacDowell Medal to jazz composer and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins on Sunday, August 15. The MacDowell Medal has been awarded annually since 1960 to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her field, and this year marks the first time the Colony has recognized the field of jazz. Rollins joins an impressive list of past recipients, including Leonard Bernstein, Alice Munro, I.M. Pei, Merce Cunningham, and Georgia O'Keeffe.

The South African jazz scene is mourning the death of iconic artist, Bheki Mseleku following a long battle with diabetes. In a statement, Minister of Arts & Culture in South Africa Pallo Jordan described Mseleku as a "supremely talented creative visionary." He added: "Perhaps more than any other musician of his generation, Mseleku was able to put his genius, that had defied man-made structural constraints, on the international map when it was easy to blame apartheid."

Since Julian Lage appeared in the documentary, Jules At Eight, as himself, an eight year-old guitar-playing prodigy, he’s been labeled a musician not easily defined. Oscar Peterson, the brilliant jazz pianist passed away on December 23rd at the age of 82. The legendary Canadian pianist was also popular amongst his peers; he was described by Duke Ellington - with whom he had frequently recorded - as the "Maharajah of the keyboard”, while Count Basie once said: "Oscar Peterson plays the best ivory box I've ever heard."

The Detroit born sax virtuoso – who plays every kind of sax from soprano down to the enormous bass sax - has caused a stir in the jazz scene ever since he arrived on the New York scene in 1993 aged just 23. Leading Norwegian singer Silje Nergaard has been honoured with an important Dutch music award. The Edison Award is the most important prize of the Dutch music industry for albums of outstanding quality. Estsablished since 1960 it is the oldest musical prize in the Netherlands, equivalent in significance to that of the American Grammy Awards, the German Preis der Schallplattenkritik and the French Victoire.

Without question one of the most important figures in the last 50 years of jazz legendary keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul passed away on Tuesday 11th September in his native city of Vienna, Austria aged 75. One of the central figures in the creation of jazz-fusion, helping perform and compose In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew with Miles Davis as well as forming the hugely successful and influential group Weather Report, Zawinul was a tireless performer and consistent innovator throughout his life.

Drummer Max Roach, one of the last surviving greats from the golden age of bebop, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Thursday 16th of August 2007. One of the key musical figures that emerged at the same time as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Roach’s powerful hard swinging style was an integral part of the development of the bebop style.
