Trombonist Clifton Anderson has been playing with Sonny Rollins for more than twenty five years. Yet his story begins on 5th October 1957 when he was born in Harlem. His family were already deeply immersed in music with his father a church organist and his mother a singer and talented violinist. At just seven years old Anderson got his first trombone – from his famous uncle Sonny Rollins – which sparked his interest in music yet it was his enrollment at New York;s prestigious Fiorella LeGuardia High School that saw him realize his early potential. After graduating he then continued his studies at the State University of Stonybrook on Long Island but this proved an unsatisfactory move so he decided to audition for the Manhattan School Of Music.     

At Manhattan he studied with Metropolitan Opera trombonist John Clark. There he also met and befriended talented musicians like Angela Bofill and the late Kenny Kirkland. Clifton graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 1978 with a Bachelor of Music degree.
